This could just be from its age. Also the battery plug in has a burnt plastic smell when you open back of box. The box is in overall good shape, light corner wear and a little dusty all around. There are 5 trains in this set.
It does not appear to be used but has some defects. It was purchased at an estate sale. All the tracks on back still have plastic wraps around them but started to disintegrate and fall apart inside of box. Shown in the pictures are a few small pieces next to their train that fell off from age.
